A Boat Shape Emerges

This week we headed back into the shop after the Thanksgiving break. We were all happy to be back together and shared stories of our favorite Thanksgiving foods and things we are grateful for. Then we spent some time playing games. These are an important opportunity for our group to work together, get to know each other, laugh and have fun. The girls really enjoyed the challenge of “Where’s My Hat?”, a game where they needed to steal and move a hat from one side of the room to another.

Heading down into the shop, we got to work. Some girls were working on layouts, cuts, and planing for their box projects. Others we sanding and prepping boxes from last year. A few got enticed by some square blocks in the scrap bin and began making huge sets of dice.

The girls working on the boat today had an important task. They installed the stem, sides and mid-ship frame. This is the first day that all of our pieces came together and really started to look like a boat! It was a fun and tricky process of using some goopy black Sikaflex to bed the joints and then fasten the pieces into place.

The Girls’ Boat Project continues to be a group where girls have fun being together while we work to solve problems, learn skills, and overcome challenges. We hope you keep following our progress!
