Taking Care of Townshend

Today was the first day of winter maintenance for Townshend. After a successful haul out last week, we jumped into the many tasks that need to be done to prepare Townshend for our upcoming journey.  It was exciting to be working alongside boats like Sparrow, who is out for winter maintenance, and Bout who is in for a full rebuild.

First off, Scott Jones, the NWMC boat shop manager filled us in on the tasks we needed to work on and important safety reminders for working in the boat shop. Thank you Admiralty Ship Supply for donating Tyvek suits and booties!!

Then we got to work– “mung hunting” to clean the bilge of debris, sanding, oiling, painting, and repairing floorboards.

At the end of the day we had accomplished a lot! Some of our favorite tasks were: using a heat gun, working independently, having focused tasks where we could see progress, oiling the boat, building the floorboards, sweet nailing, and sanding. We want to learn more about boat design and building, what the other projects in the shop are doing, varnishing, and wood working in general. Go Bravo Team!!
