Smooth Townshend Haulout

Today was a success as Townshend sits on the trailer downstairs ready for her annual maintenance to begin and the annual Coast Guard Inspection next week.

It was the first day back for Port Townsend School District and we were uncertain as to how many students would be showing up for today’s longboat haulout.  Thanks to volunteers and our 6 Bravo Team students, we had enough to make a plan and execute it successfully.

After gear loading and a quick name game, we headed down to the boat and quickly got underway.  Our ritual of Moment of Silence and snack happened on the tail end of our row to the haulout ramp in Boat Haven.

We got to Boat Haven on schedule and students readied themselves for their tasks at hand: mast unstepping crew, and port and starboard boat scrubbing crews.  Once the boat was on the trailer, activity began!

Donuts were a reward on the ride home aboard Martha J and crew unloaded gear before the end of class.  Highlights of the day shared were: working together efficiently, scrubbing the bottom, unstepping masts, moment of silence, laughter, donuts, and beautiful scenery and wildlife sightings.

Next week we will begin our month-long maintenance period in the NWMC shop.  Stay tuned for much activity as well as continued news of our upcoming environmental project.  Thanks for your support!
