Charts & Dead Reckoning – Online

Navigation without a GPS! Learn to use latitude, longitude, compass bearings, transits, and your paper charts to know where you are. This is an introduction to the traditional art of dead reckoning.

Our Charts & Dead Reckoning online class focuses on traditional navigation techniques, emphasizing the use of paper charts and the method of dead reckoning. Through this course, participants will learn the fundamental skills to determine their location at sea—invaluable for seafarers and enthusiasts aiming to navigate with confidence and precision without the need for modern technology.

Course Details:

April 16–17, Sept 17–18
6:30–8 PM | Cost: $90 non-member, $81 member

  • Prerequisites: None
  • Platform: Online; a Zoom link is provided one week before class
  • Teaching style: This class consists of a presentation followed by interactive discussions and a Q&A session.
  • Duration: Two consecutive evenings (1.5 hours each session)
  • Materials: You will need the following materials to participate in class; they are available for purchase in the Chandlery on the NWMC campus and also through our online store.
    • Chart 18471 “Approaches to Admiralty Inlet”
    • Dividers
    • Parallel Ruler
    • Pencil and eraser

    Optional materials:

    • Hand bearing compass
    • Chart No. 1

  • Notes: Please watch for the Zoom link, to be sent via email one week before class. This class has a four-person minimum.
