A Little Help From Our Friends

Bravo Team was called in today to lend a hand to help launch Longboat Bear.  We launched Townshend a few weeks back (blog post: https://nwmaritime.org/bravo-team/floating-our-boat/) after putting lots of energy into her maintenance in the boatshop.  Bear is very similar to Townshend except for some details like her planking (carvel on Bear, lapstrake on Townshend), her sole

The Slowest Way to Do Anything

Today was the first sailing day of the the year!  And it was full of laughter, slow-ish sailing, and much learning of words and parts of the boat. Sailing involves learning a new language.  Some of the words to make sure we all know are: clew, tack, foot, head, leech, luff, peak, throat, halyard, reef

Shave and a Haircut

Bravo Team’s last day of maintenance was today to complete Townshend’s annual ‘shave and a haircut.’ We got right to work and had all hands on deck complete the last of the hull prep before we vacuumed and wiped before paint.  Having an early snack allowed us to get powered up for nearly two hours

Rainbows and Seagulls

Bravo Team members were busy with more Townshend maintenance today in the Boat Shop. We had a chance for a group activity for new team members to get to know each other.  Then we split into teams of two and headed to the boatshop to start work.  After we got our Personal Protective Equipment on,

Maintenance Season Begins…

Longboat Maintenance Season is upon us!  Bravo Team didn’t let up today as we began to make dust in the boatshop.  Winter weather has proven windy and the Small Craft Advisory showed us that hauling out Townshend wouldn’t be prudent.  The longboat masts and yards work was started yesterday; And today we finished prepping them

Huddling Together

With a Gale Warning in effect in Admiralty Inlet, Bravo Team stayed ashore today.  We learned more about the Certificate of Inspection that we are bound to follow.  4 parameters of conditions will keep us ashore – If any of these conditions are in place, we are not allowed to go out. Less than 2

The King of Tides

Bravo Team welcomed two new members today.  After doing a fun name game and brainstorming qualities of teamwork for our Ship’s Article, we headed down to the dock to take Onward for a spin.  With the recent King Tides (aka Spring Tides), we noticed a lot of large driftwood (aka deadheads) floating near Point Hudson.

Lee Shore Sailing

Bravo Team went sailing today with a southerly wind that took some teamwork and concentration to sail in.  Before we headed out, there was a chalk talk about points of sail and sail parts.  Many pictures and vocabulary words were drawn on the dry erase board (students have joked about this maritime / sailing class

How to Learn

Bravo Team braved the rain showers today by gearing up and showing up.  All were in attendance and we took out longdory Onward as a way to try a new vessel with our smaller numbers. Many people commented on the ease in which she rows and moves.  Taking time to do things right, as Mister

What is the Recipe for Success? – Adult Teambuilding

This past week, East Jefferson Habitat for Humanity Chapter (https://www.habitat.org/us-wa/port-townsend/east-jefferson-county-hfh) decided to get outside of the office / worksite and try something new with the help of Northwest Maritime Center Program Staff and Longboat Townshend.   They wanted to… do “something that would be fun for people and totally different from the normal workday, something that would
