Community Matters

We started off today looking at the results of the #GivingTuesday and #GiveLikeAGirl fundraising campaigns which took place yesterday. More than $23,000 was raised to support women and girls maritime programming. We are so proud to be part of this movement.

Our discussion question was “What are the characteristics of a good team or community member?” The girls listed things like being helpful, hardworking and kind, giving others opportunities to try new things, putting differences aside to work together functionally, and having fun together. We will use this discussion to make our Ship’s Articles or team agreements next week.

Then we headed down to the shop where there was a lot to do. After several days of prep, the boat crew got stringers installed in the boat. That was a great sense of accomplishment! The bench project crew was busy grooving, sawing, and chiseling tool trays, mortising mallet heads, and laying out templates for mallet handles.

We worked together and helped each other with many steps of these projects. At the end of the day we only had a few minutes to reflect. We recognized some of those positive characteristics of community in each other: helping each other, jumping in and trying new things, and having a good time.
