Get to know Team Old Salts

First thing first. Why race in WA360?
What better way to spend a week on the water with a crew of old salty guys

What’s your connection to these waters?
Personal and professional. Our team includes folks who earn their livings in the maritime industry/world, from ship repair to marine policy. We also sail and boat all over PS. It is a place where we all have had many adventures and a few misadventures.

Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?

  • Do not crack under extreme pressure, including sailing through Deception Pass.
  • Sleep anywhere, anytime, under all conditions.
  • Bikability, including late night on the back of a boat in the rain.
  • Effective team building with a bunch of old guys.
  • Ability to effectively sail and drink at the same time (Old Salts trademark).
  • Bringing this motley crew together.

Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
There is nothing more fulfilling than peddling a 15,000 lbs. boat against the current in Covos Passage. And North Star accommodates a stove, fridge, head, sauna, beds, washer/dryer/ message therapist, wine “cellar” (actually well packed bilge, and chef.

What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
Are you kidding me? Among us we have about 290 years of sailing experience, from the North Sea to the Caribbean, to the South Seas. Several of us have transited the Pacific, Atlantic and the Panama Canal. At least one of us can transit the Dixon Entrance without barfing. And we are grandfathers, OutwardBounders, crocheters, canvas workers.

What is going to break?
At least one body part and the sprits of those we pass on the race course.
