First thing first. Why race in WA360?
I have been interested in the R2AK since it’s inception and always thought I’d enter it one year, and was seriously thinking about it in 2025, but it’s not running, only the WA360 is. Seem like a great chance to try my hand at ocean racing, only with half the distance, in more sheltered waters, and closer to civilization.
What’s your connection to these waters?
I paddle a lot in the waters just north of Puget Sound. I have paddle a bit down in the sound, namely canoeing and SUPing in the tidal rapids of Deception Pass and around Gig Harbor.
Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
Courage, to go out in conditions that many will not.
Planning, using tide/current tables and weather forecasts to make informed travel decisions
Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
It is a cool vessel, a 18′ 9″ sailing canoe, it started as a touring outrigger, and later gained a second ama and a sail. It’s a very sturdy craft, can easily store gear and a weeks worth of provisions.
What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
I’ve been paddling most of my life, with lots of ocean trips, many of them solo and in remote locations. I’ve also done a lot or white water canoeing, also in remote areas.
What is going to break?
Well, always keeping an eye on the unstayed mast in gusty winds, then the risk of shallow rock taking out the swing up rudder.
