Bravo Team: Haulout for the New Year

By Sean Bunting, Bravo Team Instructor

Sometimes it’s best to start a new year fresh. Bravo Team took this idea and ran with it (rowed with it?) all the way to the travel lift at Boat Haven Marina. During our first class of the new year, we hauled Townshend out for a bit of paint and polish to keep her stout and steady. The day began with getting underway and rowing past the Coast Guard cutter, Osprey, for a quick look around the marina before heading back to the haulout dock.

The travel lift crew was launching another boat and had to get the lift ready for us, so we had no other choice but to do some doughnuts in the turning basin before going in for a landing. The wind made things mildly interesting and twisted us as we came in at first (the alignment was perfect, darn it!) but with some quick commands, we made it in smoothly.

Townshend was given a quick spritz with the pressure washer before being put on our trailer and getting a ride to the Northwest Maritime Center for the next month of sanding, painting, and varnishing some rough edges. Our Bravo Team students will be helping with work on the boat in the next month and learn some basic maintenance skills. We will also use the shore time to prepare for our environmental project, where Bravo Team picks a project to do as a group that will benefit the local community and ecology.
