What is Maritime?

Maritime is anything connected to the sea! It’s not just about being on boats! Do you have a passion for researching ocean creatures or a desire to make a greener, more sustainable world for future generations? Then maritime is for you, too! From phytoplankton to supertankers, Maritime embodies a wide variety of jobs both on and off the water. Maritime attorney, marine biologist, ferry captain, ship engineer, shipbuilder, marine superintendent—these are just a few of the many job titles under the Maritime umbrella.

Why Maritime?

  • The average salary of Maritime careers is $112,000/year
  • College is not always required—there are plenty of on-the-job training opportunities.
  • Do you love travel and adventure? There are plenty of opportunities for that!
  • There are almost 70,000 Maritime jobs in Washington state
  • Maritime jobs are in high demand; the maritime industry is projecting a significant shortage of mariners.

The Student Learning Experience at Maritime High School

Maritime High School takes a learn-by-doing approach to education. Much of the student’s learning is experiential—where they are in the field, engaged in hands-on projects with industry and community partners. Time is also spent on campus in a classroom setting, and there may also be days that students learn from home.

In the 9th and 10th grades, most learning takes place in small, tight-knit cohorts as students explore the vast opportunities in maritime. In the 11th and 12th grades, students pick a pathway to focus on—either Vessel Operations, Design, & Maintenance; Marine Resources & Research; or Marine Construction & Engineering—and they work towards earning industry certifications for entry into a job or internship.

By graduation, students have the skills to launch directly into a maritime career or continue studying at college.
