Back in the Shop Again!

This week we headed back into the shop. The first part of our day was spent reviewing shop safety and re-orienting ourselves to using the tools. Each girl went through a rotation with our instructors. They practiced lining up cuts on the band saw and turning it on and off safely. Then they went to the drill press and practiced changing the bits and drilling a hole. Finally, they inspected our hand tool kits, used the combination square to draw a straight line, and then practiced cutting with a pull saw.

After a quick break outside we got to work. Half of our group started the layout for their tool trays and the other half went to work on the boat. Before we knew it, it was time to clean up.

Our end of day reflection was on something we learned: how to plane better with a block plane, how to use machines, how to skip rocks, how to sweep more effectively, how to be patient, and how to use a combination square. We look forward to learning more next week.
