Steambending Wood For Boats
Weekend Workshop Series
April 11, 2026 | 9 AM–5 PM | Cost: $139 non-member, $129 member
Description:
Discover the time-honored craft of steambending wood in this hands-on, one-day workshop designed for boat builders, woodworking enthusiasts, and maritime history buffs alike.
Held on a Saturday, this class will guide you through the process of using steam to make wood pliable, allowing it to bend gracefully into the curves so essential in traditional boat construction. You’ll learn the science behind the method, what types of wood work best, and how to safely and effectively use a steam box. Throughout the day, we’ll cover the practical applications of steam bending in boatbuilding—from frames and ribs to trim and rails—while you gain experience working with heated wood in real time. You’ll also walk away with a clear understanding of how this process contributes to both the strength and aesthetics of wooden boats.
Whether you’re restoring a classic or building from scratch, steam bending is an essential technique that brings your vessel to life. This is a unique opportunity to engage with a foundational skill in wooden boatbuilding in a supportive, hands-on environment. No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to get a little steamy!
