Longboats of the Northwest: History, Use & Care
Weekend Workshop Series
July 11, 2026 | 9 AM–5 PM | Cost: $139 non-member, $129 member
Description:
Step into the legacy of maritime exploration with this one-day class dedicated to the iconic longboats used by Northwest Maritime for on-water education. These 26-foot open boats are faithful replicas of the longboats used by Captain George Vancouver during his epic 18th-century charting of the Pacific Northwest. Built by the Northwest School of Wooden BoatBuilding, they represent a beautiful intersection of craftsmanship, history, and hands-on learning.
In this class, you’ll explore the fascinating history of the original longboats, how they were used for exploration, transport, and survival, and how their legacy continues today through experiential maritime programs. We’ll take a close look at the construction details that make these boats seaworthy and durable, and discuss how traditional design supports modern educational use.
You’ll also learn the practical side—how to care for and maintain these boats, from routine upkeep to preventative maintenance, and the best practices for safe and effective operation with students aboard. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions, storytelling, and close-up examination of the boats and their gear. Whether you’re a volunteer, educator, maritime history buff, or just a lover of well-built wooden boats, this class offers a unique look at how the past continues to shape hands-on education in the present.
