Going Slow to Go Smooth

Bravo Team numbers were small this week but not in energy or focus.  We went sailing on our longboat for the first time and enjoyed the weather and each other’s company! A new coxswain got to practice getting us out of the harbor with one week of experience under our belt.  We did some rowing

It’s Only the Beginning

Today was the first class of Bravo Team for 2018 – 2019!  Janet is teaching for OCEAN this year and she has much maritime experience in her life up and down the West Coast.  Many new students showed up today to learn about what Bravo Team is and how we’ll progress through the year with

Schooner School Graduation

Spring Schooner School students had their last class on June 13th.  As a part of the celebration, students shared their thoughts around the class and what they had learned. “I never have been on boats before and learned more about myself than I could have imagined,” said one student. Another appreciated, “I learned what the

A Little of This (work), A Little of That (play)

The end of the school year is soon here.  Bravo Team’s second to last class was today and after such a full, awesome journey (see blog post https://nwmaritime.org/2018/05/10/bravo-team-journey-day/) on Tuesday, the group decided to focus in on their environmental project.  Their video regarding plastic straws and why they suck for the environment, specifically the Salish Sea, came

To Do or Not to Do, There is No Try

This quote by Yoda broke the silence today during Bravo Team Class – To Do or Not to Do, There is No Try.  In the classroom at the beginning of class, we decided to shift gears in our Journey Planning to look at a shorter, more local trip the second week of May.  Stand by

Camera, Action!

Today’s class was focused on the Environmental Project to make use of the planning we have done for the past month.  We let students decide how we best use our time today – they chose to focus entirely on the Plastic Straw Video. Before we got into the environmental project, we recommitted our Ship’s Articles

Videography 101

Today’s class was about planning and preparations, both for Bravo Team Journey coming up in May, and for video-making for our environmental project. We began with an overview of the Eastern San Juan Islands to help students plan for the potential route.  Leaving from and returning to Anacortes, how can we best use the currents

Team Thankful

Another Small Craft Advisory kept us shore-side today.  With a mostly full crew, we headed outside for a trust-building and laughter-inducing game called Battle Bots.  The purpose of the game is for two teams to communicate with their robot (a blind-folded team member) to help them pick up a ball and hit the other robot.

Adapting to Adversity

We started the day with more getting to know each other– Nancy had us write down a hobby, our favorite book and our favorite food on a piece of paper. Then we shuffled them around and had to find the person who wrote those things. After getting into our new partnerships, we headed outside to

Small Craft Advisory & House Cleaning

Today was our first Small Craft Advisory (SCA) of the year and we spent time looking at the actual weather happening outside versus what had been happening earlier in the day and what is predicted to happen later in the day (Gale in the Eastern Straits!). NOAA Admiralty Inlet Forecast for November 2nd showed an SCA
