Get to know Team Wild Unos

First thing first. Why race in WA360?
WA360 is a very challenging race which will encompass all aspects of sailing. The fact that in addition to being a long race -one has to deal with all kinds of navigational decisions – decide on how to handle tides and currents as well as trying to get your boat around the course as fast as you can. Throw in being on board with 5 people in a 30 foot boat – you have an adventure!

What’s your connection to these waters?
We all live in the Bellingham area and are fortunate to enjoy Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
No real superpowers but…
John (son) – a licensed Captain, paramedic and the founder of Back Country Medical Guides. Professionally he holds clinics for crews etc. for the long ocean races like the Transpac. Keeping this crew afloat and healthy will be the goal.
Elias – has mastered taking apart every system on board the boat from plumbing to electronics. Next year he plans on learning how to re-assemble everything.
Toby- the builder – can construct a livable hut with only the tools on board should we wash up on any land mass.
Julz- The climber- has more energy than all combined. If the wind doesn’t co-operate, she has offered to basically do all the rowing and pedaling for the entire race.
John (father) -Experienced racer and moveable ballast.

Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
Maiden is the first prototype of the Wilderness 30. UN-1 (of 3) that were gradually improved before going into production. No interior to speak of. 40 year old ultra light. Basically, a Moore 24 stretched to 30 feet. A great boat to try all kinds of modifications with as that is what it was designed for.

What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
Most of the crew are very experienced sailors. While all save one are new to this boat which has not been in the Puget Sound as yet – we have a great cross section of sailing adventures from all over the country and in a variety of boats.

What is going to break?
We are basically rebuilding this boat which has not seen a lot of use for several years in Santa Cruz. However – it is an old boat and a prototype – so the possibility of things breaking down is good! With a very limited budget – and doing all the work ourselves – almost anything might be an issue. We are designing a pedal power system and dual rowing stations but they are untried as yet.
