Introducing the Maritime High School Bloggers!

Hello! My name is Mara Mersai, and I am one of the bloggers for Maritime High School (MHS)! What interested me to choose MHS is that it focuses more on fieldwork experiences and science, and I wanted to work more outside than being inside. I live in SeaTac, Washington, along with my mom and two siblings. I like to draw most of the time, play with my siblings, or just watch Netflix. At Maritime High School, I have been riding on Admiral Jack every Thursday, plotting other voyages, and even driving the boat! (Of course, with supervision). Right now we’re working on POLs during the week of Thanksgiving. A POL (Presentation of Learning) is when students present their learning plan and goals that they have for themselves. It helps them give what they’ve been learning, and it also helps them receive feedback that could help them achieve their goals, and improve on the goals they need to do. Anyway, something that excites me about the Maritime High School blog is that we would find topics to talk about on our future blogs! I want to learn how to express myself through the blog—well, with emojis. I don’t know if we can even use emojis here, but my teacher thinks I should. ?  Can’t wait for you all to see more of our blogs!

Hello! My name is Asher Lucero, and I’m a 15-year-old 9th grader at Maritime High School. I chose MHS because I liked the idea of hands-on, project based learning, which is a good contrast to having seven classes a day and no time to work outside—plus I enjoy the fun lessons and activities. I live in West Seattle with my parents, younger brother, and my cat. I like reading, drawing, tennis, and video games. I decided to be an editor for the new MHS blog because it sounded fun and would be a new experience for me. I hope blogging about things we do and learn in the different maritime settings we experience will be enjoyable for every reader.

Hello, I am Chanel. I am a 14-year-old student at Maritime High School in Des Moines, WA. Some of my hobbies are reading, collecting books, running, and swimming. Originally, I wanted to go to a typical school and I didn’t really enjoy my first couple of days here, but when I got to make friends and see all the opportunities—like going on a boat weekly, seeing marine animals up close, and more—I found myself wanting to continue going here. I find writing to be a great stress reliever when you’re writing about something you enjoy and think is interesting. Hopefully, this blog can provide information and visuals of what it’s like to go to MHS as a freshman student.

Hello! My name is Giselle Esparza. I am 14 years old, and I’m a Maritime High School blogger and writer! What interested me to go to Maritime High School is my Tia, LeeAnne. She helped with the school and it sounded very fun and interesting to me. I was still on the fence even after the Argosy cruise, but I decided to come. I’m very happy I did because I made some amazing friends and I’ve done things in the past two months that I’ve never done in my whole life! I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, so it was a little difficult moving away from home and not being able to see family every day or live with my mom and dad, however, I do get to see them for Christmas and I’m excited for that. I live in Burien currently with my aunt and uncle. I really like listening to music, talking to friends, playing video games, watching Netflix, talking to my mom and dad on the phone, boxing, and crying. Something that excites me about MHS bloggers is that it’s like a journal of what I did in high school and I get to share it and show people what we do and learn. I’m excited to learn what it’s like to be a blogger, how blogging works, and to learn from other MHS bloggers. I also think it will be a new and fun experience to try out, and if I like it then I’ll continue to do it. If I don’t, then at least I did it. But in the meantime, I hope you all enjoy our blogs!
