Get A Handle On It: Paddle Making 101
Weekend Workshop Series
January 17-18, 2026 | 9 AM–5 PM | Cost: $279 non-member, $259 member
Description:
Join us for a two-day immersive workshop where you’ll craft your own wooden canoe, kayak, or SUP paddle from raw lumber using traditional hand tools and time-tested techniques.
This hands-on class is perfect for beginners and aspiring woodworkers looking to gain foundational skills in shaping, carving, and finishing wood. You’ll use basic tools such as spokeshaves, drawknives, hand planes, rasps, and sanding blocks to transform a rough blank into a functional and beautiful paddle. Throughout the weekend, you’ll learn about wood selection, grain orientation, paddle design, and finishing techniques to ensure both performance and durability. Students are encouraged to bring their own tools if they have them, especially spokeshaves, drawknives, and favorite hand tools—but all necessary tools will be provided.
This is more than just a paddle-making class; it’s an opportunity to develop core woodworking skills that serve as a strong foundation for future boatbuilding or other advanced woodworking projects. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a handcrafted paddle and the knowledge to create more. No prior experience is needed, just bring your enthusiasm and a readiness to learn!
