Considering the pandemic circumstances, we were thrilled to offer a modified Maritime Discovery program with the Port Townsend School District/Blue Heron Middle School in June. Our main goals were fun, hands-on and engaging learning free from computer screens! All the 7th graders had the opportunity to attend in small cohorts with one day at NWMC and two days exploring the Chetzemoka Trail.
Each day students rode bicycles down to NWMC and rotated through 3 activities. The USCG Damage Control Simulator challenged students to find ways to manage flooding scenarios and learn how to use a de-watering pump. Science activities included water quality tests and collecting/viewing plankton. Knot tying and heaving lines were the focus of a mariner’s skills activity on the beach. It was truly rewarding to hear the laughter and chatter of 7th graders on campus again!
