Get to know Team Shaka

First thing first. Why race in WA360?
Like many racers before us, we watched the R2AK documentary, and said, “Let’s do it.” Rich Treadwell and I bought a boat in May 2024 looking to race R2AK 2024, but could only get organized to do the Proving Grounds, where we found a cool community of people and racers. We are here for the challenge and the adventure of the race, but are coming back also for the people and the beautiful setting.
We are gearing up for R2AK 2026, and need all the time to sort out our systems and see what may break

What’s your connection to these waters?
Tim – lived and worked in the area several different times in his life. One summer as a seasonal park ranger in the Olympic National Park, Lived on Mt Rainier at Camp Muir for 3 months another summer. Lived in Steilacoom for 5 years overlooking the calm windless waters of Southern Puget Sound all summer. Kayaking mostly.

Ian – Born in Tacoma, lived there for his first 4 years, but has returned later in life to backcountry ski, hike and mountaineer.

Jonathan – Long time sailor with many cruises in the area, and was also the captain/leader of Team Hullabaloo which came in 3rd in R2AK 2024.

Jacob – Sailed with his father on Hullabaloo in R2AK 2024, has spent time in the San Juans

Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
Tim – Known not to snore
Ian – Has been living like a fish on the Great Barrier reef for a year
Jonathan – Proven that he can pedal for hours in a dry suit
Jacob – X factor – We know he has it

*With us in spirit this trip, but hoping he will recover from his achilles tendon injury to join us in R2AK 2026.

Rich Treadwell – Quick healing powers

Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
Santa Cruz 27 is a proven boat in many different races, despite being built in 1978.

In R2AK 2024 there were 4. (Shout out to Only Lubbers Left Alive, SLAM, Roscoe Pickle Train and Rock the Boat.)

Prior owner sailed it in solo Transpac 2018, so it is set up to be sailed easily by 1-2 people.

The weathered appearance will make people underestimate us.

What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
Tim – 40 + years of outdoor adventure in small boat racing, kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering, remote history of SAR work on Denali, and in the Pacific NW.

Ian – Sailor,Sailing Instructor, hiker and backcountry skier. Currently working as an underwater photographer on the Great Barrier reef.

Jonathon – Years of climbing, mountaineering, proven track record that he has it from R2AK 2024

Jacob – Proven racer from R2AK

Team of fathers/sons – how cool is that.

What is going to break?
We will see on a boat that was built in 1978

Our sleep cycle

Our common sense – wait, that is already gone to participate in this race
