First thing first. Why race in WA360?
We love type two fun, we love adventure, and we love sailing in the Puget Sound.
What’s your connection to these waters?
I (Joe) have grown up in the area. My family lives on these waters, we have been boating and fishing in the Puget Sound for generations. Taylor and I learned to sail in the Puget Sound, and a few years back we sailed our first boat right out the straits and down to San Francisco. Charley’s never been to the Puget Sound but I reckon he’s going to have a connection to the area by the end of the race.
Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
“Joe – Personally I would love to be able to eat and not gain weight. I LOVE FOOD. For the race it’d be far more practical to have X-ray vision so we don’t have to worry about the fog.
Taylor – if you suped up Taylor she would turn into the Flash with super speed. She’s a former collegiate runner and currently working as a high school track coach. She’s also the most caring person I’ve ever met and studying for her masters in social work, so maybe her she would be an Empath if she became super.
Charles – If Charley became super he would have super strength, and he would never leave the rowing station of our boat. Charles is also the guy who is always smiling even when shit is hitting the fan, and that’s pretty super for an event like this one.”
Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
The San Juan 21 was built for racing, right here in the Puget Sound. This particular unit is 52 years old so we definitely have the local experience and tribal knowledge on our side.
What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
Taylor and I (Joe) have sailed from Seattle to Mexico together so that’s pretty cool, Charlie once spent a month solo in the backcountry in Alaska. Charlie has never sailed before and he’s willing to learn during this race, so that’s pretty cool.
What is going to break?
The only thing that our boat is going to break is the hearts of all the other racers who finished behind us when we get first place.
