Tools to Make Tools: Build Like a Boatbuilder

Junior Shipwright Series
August 17–21, 2026 | 9 AM–4 PM | Cost: $549 non-member, $499 member

Description:

In this hands-on class, students will step into the world of traditional boatbuilding by learning the craft the old-school way, using hand tools to make more tools! Throughout the week, students will learn to safely and confidently use essential tools like hand saws, chisels, rasps, planes, and braces as they build their own tool tote and a custom wooden mallet or bevel gauge to take home.

Along the way, they’ll pick up core woodworking skills like layout, measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling, which are all skills that are still at the heart of boatbuilding today. Each project is designed to be fun, functional, and a little bit challenging, helping students build confidence and develop more precision with every cut.

This is a great opportunity for students who love working with their hands, enjoy problem-solving, and want to join this great community of boatbuilders and craftspeople. Plus, they’ll walk away with a personalized toolbox full of their own handcrafted tools that are ready for future adventures in woodworking and boatbuilding. No prior experience needed, just a willingness to learn.
