Thanks From Volunteer Coordinator Tracy Thompson
SEVENTY48 wrapped up on Sunday, and what an incredible gift of support our volunteers provided to this effort of grit and courage.
A dozen folks traveled to Tacoma to help direct traffic, get teams registered, and lift boats up and off of vehicles and into the water.
In Port Townsend at the finish line, volunteers were onsite overnight at the Northwest Maritime Center and throughout the weekend to welcome, cheer, record, and photograph the racers.
And, volunteers were on hand to put on the Necktie Affair, the final hurrah of the event, where “walking tacos” were served and prize money was handed out to the winners.
We are so grateful for your wonderful assistance!

Hey all of you SEVENTY48 Volunteers,
SEVENTY48 is a big undertaking! I’ve known that for years from the side of Northwest Maritime, and now I know it after successfully completing it as a participant (57th place—personal best!) Having seen it from the other side of the registration form, I just have to say, well done.
It’s always been a great race; it’s always created incredible experiences and a great community, great stories, and longtime friends of the organization. What I got to experience for the first time was just how layered, kind, and competent it is for the participants. Every single racer I talked to had nothing but glowing things to say about their experience and how we as an organization, and our volunteers, made them feel as participants. Jesse is the Race Boss, and he’s the one who gets the well-deserved “World’s Best Race Boss” mug at the end of the day, but I wanted to just take a moment to say well done to the multitudes who are behind the success and community of last weekend.
From the check-in, boat logistics, safety, media, on-water, off-water—up to and including all of the folks up all of the hours to make sure teams had a warm welcome—well done. Putting on this race is a team sport, and while I already knew it, seeing it as a participant opened my eyes even wider: y’all are a bunch of all-stars.
We have a saying at Northwest Maritime: “We don’t do ‘B’ work.” By all measures, this SEVENTY48 would have gotten an A+, really well done y’all. Thank you for being a huge part of something incredible.
