What’s a piece of advice you’d give your younger self?

Be a sponge!

Why maritime? What is your connection to the sea?

I’ve always been drawn towards working on the water because of the really unique way that it fosters learning and growth. Helping new mariners learn the ropes with curiosity, humility and willingness to work with a team is always a very rewarding experience.

Experience, in your words:

Hi, my name is Ted! I first started messing about in boats at age eight, in my hometown of Gloucester, MA. Since then, I’ve made a living sailing on vessels of all different shapes and sizes, everywhere from the Caribbean to Alaska. This is my fourth season with Northwest Maritime, where I work as a captain and an educator for both youth and adult programs. In the offseason, I usually sail on tall ships, ideally in warmer climates.
