Get to know Team Caution Buoys

First thing first. Why race in WA360?
We’ve been tracker junkies following the Northwest Maritime Center’s races since 2018, and the WA360 has been calling our names for years. As three athletic(ish), adventure-loving Pacific Northwest buoys, we’re always looking for ways to challenge ourselves and connect more deeply with the place we call home. We’re excited to be part of something bigger than ourselves—powered by nature, community, and probably a questionable amount of instant coffee.

What’s your connection to these waters?
We all grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have spent a lot of time on the water. Summers learning to sail Hobie Cats off Bowen Island were a big part of our childhoods. This race is a chance to explore more of the waters around our home and connect even more with the place we’re from.

Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
Collin – The Time Trapper Napper – Time stops when he sleeps so he never miss any of the action.
Charlie – Questionable Confidence Guy – Says “it’ll buff out” and “totally normal” way too often to be trusted.
Jack – Game Day Strategist – Approaches every tack like it’s 4th and goal in the playoffs. Probably shouts “Let’s go!” after a good gybe.

Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
She’s a San Juan 24 named Caution, designed by Clark Sailboats—a classic Pacific Northwest racer-cruiser from the 1970s. Not the fastest, but solidly built and a great size. We’ve owned three San Juans, and bought this one from racer Emily Dingwell, who finished the 2024 R2AK. The buoys plan to sail her in the WA360, then aim for the 2026 R2AK.

What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
We’re all stubborn, sweaty, and weirdly into Type 2 fun. Captain Jack played college lacrosse and now lives at the intersection of CrossFit, hiking, biking, snowboarding and sailing. Collin played college soccer and basically moonlights as a pro cyclist. Charlie’s a former rugby bruiser turned men’s league lacrosse menace, he’s the guy you want when stuff breaks—or needs breaking.

What is going to break?
The boat? Maybe. Us? Never. But let’s just say we’re bringing a lot of zip ties and caution tape.
