Get to know Team South Sound Suckafish
First thing first. Why race in WA360?
We are always traveling north from Olympia for various races or just heading up to play in the San Juans and Canada so why not race the entire transit and make it more fun! We are also interested in the R2AK and feel that this race will either make or break the pursuit of that dream.
What’s your connection to these waters?
We have all been racing, boating and working around the Puget Sound for most of our adult lives.
Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
Hans, Experience: Hans has the most experience on the water and around boats in general. His knowledge is vast, and he is excellent at the helm.
Rick, Most Stoked: Rick is the most stoked person about sailing that I’ve ever met. He arrives early to help set up the boat, is eager to learn and has a great attitude.
Derek, Observant: Derek understands sail trim and can give constructive advice. He can also grind through #1 tacks like a champ, has amazing bird calls and an infectious laugh.
Joel, Badass: Joel is one of those people that can pick up on anything, do it well and is ready to rally. He is always game to help out and is a crazy source of knowledge.
Heather, Motivated: Heather is always game for the next adventure and is resourceful when navigating the pathway to get there.
Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
Olson30, classic Santa Cruz glass that has proven itself time after time.
Besides the rigging, we have given the boat a fairly thorough overhaul.
What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
We have all been racing together in the Puget Sound and beyond for many years, whether it’s our hometown races around Olympia, the South Sound Series or the bigger races up north we are out there year-round. We are also all in the marine industry in some capacity and should be able to handle most craziness thrown at us.
What is going to break?
Sheesh I hate to jinx anything so let’s go with something small but very essential like the darn USB chargers or maybe our butts depending on how much we have to pedal!
