Get to know Team Desert Drifters

First thing first. Why race in WA360?
We’re here for the same reason everyone else is: we want an old-school adventure and we’re sure this race can provide.

What’s your connection to these waters?
We have long admired these waters from a distance. Living in Arizona, the maze of green islands and inlets that makes up the WA360 course seemed like a strange and magical place. Last summer, we got the opportunity to experience the area by boat and developed an even deeper appreciation of this special place. We know that we have only scratched the surface of all this region has to offer and hope to continue exploring it for years to come.

Superpowers. Each crew member gets one. What are they and why?
Sean – Physical and Mental Agility, invisibility
Patrick – Can fly a plane, which is sorta like sailing
Bailey – Knowledge of boat, mystery

Defend your vessel choice for WA360. What makes it so cool and worthy?
Our vessel of choice is the Corsair Sprint 750, a light, fast trimaran that is tough enough to take on high winds and rough seas, but light enough to handle under human power. In 2022, Raven completed the R2AK with team Lost But Don’t Care. Since then, we’ve put her through the wringer in southern California and the northwest, and we have yet to find a situation that she can’t handle.

What are your adventure qualifications for WA360? What makes you (y’all) cool and capable?
Some may doubt our credentials seeing as we come from a state where most bodies of water are walkable, but we think our background makes us uniquely prepared for this race. The course is infamous for its currents. We got started sailing on an actual creek. The weather changes quickly. Have they ever been out on Watson Lake? We’ve had our patience tested drifting on Lake Pleasant in 110 degree heat, capsized on Lake Mary during a monsoon storm, and sharpened our edge against the best during weeknight races in Tempe.

Beyond our inland experience, we’ve also sailed some other places. For the last couple of years, we have been training aboard Raven in Southern California, and last summer we trailered her up to Washington and sailed most of the WA360 course. Though it’s important to expect the unexpected, we think we’re ready for whatever this race throws at us.

What is going to break?
We’ll be paying close attention to our rudder mount and pedal drives, but that means it will probably be something else. Whatever breaks, we know that our spirit won’t.
