Wooden Boat Lettering with Gold Leaf and Carving

Weekend Workshop Series
February 14–16, 2026 | 9 AM–5 PM | Cost: $419 non-member, $389 member

Description:

Join us for a unique and inspiring three-day workshop focused on the art of traditional wooden boat lettering, featuring gold leaf application and basic hand carving techniques. Taught by master sign painter and carver Nick Mann of Whalesong Signs, widely regarded as one of the best in the trade.

This class offers a rare chance to learn from a true expert in a fun, hands-on environment. You’ll explore the fundamentals of letter design, layout, and spacing, followed by techniques for carving letters into wood and applying real gold leaf for that classic, eye-catching finish. We’ll use essential tools such as chisels, carving gouges, burnishers, and gilding brushes, and students are encouraged to bring their own tools if they have them.

Whether you’re restoring a classic vessel or adding a personal touch to your boat, this class will equip you with skills that are both practical and beautiful. Expect a relaxed and creative atmosphere where learning is fun, and everyone walks away with new techniques, confidence, and a sparkling piece of their own work. No experience is necessary, just a love for boats, craftsmanship, and gold!
