Bravo Team…A Daring Adventure

Today was the first day of Bravo Team for the 2016-17 school year. Every day we practice a moment of silence on the water. Our journalist chose to end today’s moment with a quote by Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” We have a full crew this year

Bravo Team’s Last Class

Today was our last class for the 2015-2016 school year.  Because both longboats were being used by Blue Heron Maritime Discovery Program, we were able to take out the Thunderbirds Zaca and Risa.  After sailing we had a celebration and debrief of our year.  Some of the questions we answered were: “How would you describe

Salish Sea Science Day

We had a guest scientist today, Ryan, from Salish Sea Expeditions, who guided us through some water sampling including testing pH, temperature and salinity of the water at the surface and at 3 meters deep. We also did a phytoplankton tow. The longboat is a great platform for learning science!

Journey is almost here!

Excitement is in the air as we prep for Journey beginning on Monday!  We inventoried all of the overnight gear (stove, sleeping bags, galley gear, safety equipment, etc) for a majority of the day.  We also hauled out Townshend (with the great help of Gus Sebastian and Olympic Boat Transport) at the Salmon Club ramp.

Bravo Sailors!

We are getting so dialed in our sailing skills and teamwork! The crew is excited for the journey which is coming up in less than two weeks! Today we planned our possible route and went over our personal gear list for the trip, taking place May 9-12. Out on the water we sailed upwind out towards

Journey planning and Squall drill

We are continuing to plan for the four-day journey happening in May and part of the preparation includes safety awareness and drills.  We performed a squall drill today which involved counting off for roll-call, having a ‘buddy’ to help don the exposure suits, and staying tuned in as a crew to listen for further instructions from

A rowing destination – The Tower

Today we had a nearly full class in attendance.  We took advantage of our full boat to gather information about tide, weather, and distance across Port Townsend Bay to the Tower (“marker” by  Kilisut Harbor entrance on chart 18464).  Our students determined it to be a 3 nautical mile round trip from Point Hudson to

Sunny Sailing, Navigating and Rowing!

Today was another awesomely beautiful spring day on the water. We started the day by sailing out of the marina with the wind behind us. Then we headed out into Admiralty Inlet to visit with the Rhinocerous Auklets who have returned for breeding season at Protection Island before tacking back and doing a water front tour.

A day of rowing practice

We welcome Mary d’Arcy to the Bravo Team!  Now we have nine team members: Mary d’Arcy, Ben Wilson, Audrey Drake, Rachel Doan, Gabe Hefley, Hunter Newton, Anika Avelino, Zinnia Hansen, and Isabelle Harvey. Today we focused on synchronicity.  After a Man OverBoard drill we set out on a navigation challenge.  The coordinates were:  48 degrees,
