Taking Care of Townshend-Part 3

Another day of maintenance and Bravo Team knocked it out of the park.  After practicing the Zeppelin Bend knot thoroughly we discussed this as our last day of Townshend maintenance before launching next week.  A continued focus, an awareness of our jobs, and our personal protective equipment (PPE) in place, Bravo Team headed downstairs to check in with Scott and Riley.

Oiling was the main focus today of over half the group.  After vacuuming, students suited up in Tyvek Suits donated by Bob Frank at Admiral Ship Supply (THANKS Bob!) and started laying on oil.  Townshend was thirsty and she soaked it right up.  Oars and masts also got multiple coats today.

Another group prepped and wiped items that needed varnishing like the Townshend name boards, the tiller, the yards and the transom.  Scott snuck some extra pieces in there including the Dorjun tiller. By the end of the day everything was shiny or oily and looking nice and protected.

Charlotte broke the moment of silence at snack time with the quote:

“Don’t just teach your children to read…
Teach them to question what they read.
Teach them to question everything.” ~George Carlin

After a nice moment in the sun and a discussion of the quote and anything else on our minds, we headed back into the shop for cleanup and a reflection on what we felt we accomplished during this haulout period and also an appreciation of Bravo Team.

At the end of the work day we left Townshend in the boatshop, proud of our work and knowing that next week we’ll launch her and row her back to her dock space.  A big THANK YOU to Lara Gaasland-Tatro for subbing the last two weeks!  Next week both Chrissy and Sonia will be there for the launch and we’ll make sure to share photos and stories!
