Small Craft Advisory Won’t Keep Us Inside!

Even though there was a small craft advisory today, we got ourselves down to the Townshend at the dock and did a squall drill! It was our 4th class of the season and we are continuing to progress our skills. A squall drill involves working with a buddy to don your exposure suit and reefing the sails for more controlled sailing in heavy weather.

Prior to heading down to the boat we practiced our reef knot and coiling in the classroom. We also enjoyed getting to know each other better with some fun interview questions such as “what is something we wouldn’t guess about you? and what is one of your favorite places you’ve visited?” Weather observations took place out on the deck where we could feel the force of the wind and use the Beaufort Scale to estimate wind speed. Force 5, fresh breeze, we agreed. Too much for rowing and sailing this week.

Some highlights for today included have a moment of silence and snack on the boat, learning knots, putting up the sails and seeing birds. Today’s class helped us get more familiar with the boat and each other,  and ready for our next outing, hopefully next week!
