| Exterior decks on the upper level wrap around the facility on the water side, linking the Heritage and Education Buildings. Accessible from the second floor of either building and from stairs off the Public Commons at ground level, the viewing decks provide sweeping vistas of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, Port Townsend Bay and Admiralty Inlet. |

| A primary design goal was to maximize the amount of outdoor common area for the enjoyment of both visitors and residents. This public outdoor space in the heart of Port Townsend’s downtown waterfront provides an irresistible venue for musicians, maritime artisans and craftspeople. Protected from prevailing winds during much of the summer and fall, this area is a focal point for year-round community events and maritime activities, from small boat launchings and landings to various seamanship demonstrations, educational programs and music performances. |

| Along the waterfront, just above the high-water mark, the boardwalk serves as a public promenade. It links the city park to the west with the Maritime Center dock and the Point Hudson jetty walkway. In the future this boardwalk will extend along the marina, providing walking access to the rest of Point Hudson.

Tidelands at the site accommodate dense eelgrass meadows and a variety of marine habitats, providing a rich underwater laboratory. The dock is designed to incorporate an eelgrass restoration project and includes portals
to view this underwater habitat. Interpretive panels and ongoing educational programs will foster
an understanding of the bay’s vital marine resources and will teach the natural history of Puget Sound.

| This public dock is a hub for the deep-water programs and activities offered by the Wooden Boat Foundation and various Center members. It is an ideal moorage facility for historic vessels that currently cannot be accommodated at any other dock in the area. The dock also provides a gateway to Port Townsend via ship or small boat, with floating docks and mooring buoys available to boaters.
