It was a banner year for programs, chandlery and festival accomplishments. With this fresh on their minds, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to go out to bid for the first of two Northwest Maritime Center buildings on January 28, 2008.
"The time is right", said David King, Board President since 2003. "We've got strong leadership, great momentum, a favorable construction bid climate and people who are ready to make it happen." King and Stan Cummings, Executive Director, made the announcement to the public immediately following the board decision. Articles about the announcement appeared in the Port Townsend Leader and Peninsula Daily news.
A $300,000 donation by Herb Weissblum of Whidbey Island kicked off this most recent wave of donors in conjunction with the announcement. Meetings are underway with four regional families or individuals who are considering the $2 million gift that will name the first building.
