Kokanee Students Take to the Bay

"At first I was really scared about going out on the boats, but now I love it," reports a 6th-grade student from the Kokanee School of Seattle.
Twenty-four students braved cloudy skies and a 15 knot southerly on Port Townsend Bay last Wednesday for an afternoon of boating experiences. Each student was accompanied by a parent for this intergenerational event. The students returned on Thursday for a full-day of rowing and sailing under sunny skies and pleasant north winds. Twelve-year old students rowed the longboat Bear, while other students sailed on Caveat and Dorjun. Students also took the wheel of Martha J, practicing person-over-board drills. Several students rowed the dory Gibnut as well.
"We're very glad we did a two-day program," commented teacher Melissa Karpen. "This allowed them to get a full experience in different weather and on different boats."
The group stayed at Fort Flagler State Park for two nights, and participated in activities at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center before returning to Seattle on Friday.
