Join Us for a Creative Ropecraft Workshop

Oct 26, 2009  |  Programs & Events

Learn how to make a beautiful rope mat for a holiday gift or for your own home or boat. Instructor Brian Wentzel, a Port Townsend shipwright, will teach the traditional marlinspike skill of tying rope into an Ocean Plat rope mat. Brian will also expand on the basic Ocean Plat and demo other types of knots for mats and stair treads.

Here's an opportunity to recycle old, worn pieces of line that are no longer strong enough to be used in the rig and give them a new purpose. Rope mats prevent chafe in front of hatches where repeated footfalls wear the wooden deck.

Bring your own rope to recycle: at least 20' of up to 3/8" in diameter, or purchase traditional hemp rope available at the workshop. Course participants will receive a 15% off coupon for rope purchases in the Wooden Boat Chandlery after the course.

Location: Upstairs classrooms in the Chandlery Education Bldg. at the Northwest Maritime Center

Cost: Members $27, Non-members $30
