Caulking Mallets - Live Oak - Large Caulking Mallet - 16" Head

Caulking Mallets are used together with a caulking iron to force oakum into the seams between deck or hull planks. These mallets are made by craftsman working in our own Wooden Boat Shop. The heads are made from Live Oak and fitted with tapered, hardened steel rings, made by Ulfar Anderson, of Port Townsend.

This particular mallet design causes the force of the blow from striking the mallet on the iron to travel the length of the mallet head, not down the handle into the user’s arm. Over time, this prevents elbow injury and fatigue. These mallets are a durable specialty tool for both the experienced and beginning shipwright.
